review: the minutemen – double nickels on the dime
if you were in high school in the mid to late 80’s like i was, and you were involved in the punk rock scene like i was…then you probably know about what i consider to be possible the greatest punk record ever made…double nickels on the dime by the minutemen.
released in 1984, double nickels on the dime boasts a whopping 45 songs, most of which were between one to two minutes long. mike watt’s bass thumping along with george hurley’s drumming are the perfect backdrop for the late d boon’s seemingly sarcastic growl, especially on songs like “viet nam” (ohhh here we are…in french en-do-china!). there weren’t any singles released for the album (lol singles for a punk record??) but a video was made for “this ain’t no picnic.”
what really gets me about this record compared with many of its contemporaries is that its really not what many would consider to be punk at all…and least not the hardcore punk that was so popular in the 80’s. no, double nickels on the dime is a rock n roll record, and a masterpiece at that. yeah its full of political commentary (what punk isn’t?) but its far more than that. there’s even a rant about pop icon michael jackson (a bit of foreshadowing?), and a cover of van halen’s “ain’t talkin’ bout love”
you know, there really isn’t a bad thing i could say about this record. if you don’t own it…you should, especially if you’re any sort of self professed music aficionado. no music collection is complete without a copy of this record. it belongs on the shelf next to thriller, abbey road, who’s next…you get the picture. even if you don’t like punk rock, you’ll like this.
